Polygamous marriages aren’t legal in the United States. But even so, Sister Wives star Kody Brown had four wives for several years.

It’s an incredibly complicated situation for a wide range of reasons. But lately, some fans have wondered how the Brown family filled out government forms. For example, where did he list his legal address?

Kody Brown Always Kept One Legal Wife

Although Kody Brown had four wives for a very long time, one always kept a legal status. For decades, that title belonged to Meri Brown. However, he legally divorced her so he could marry Robyn and adopt her three children from a different marriage.

But which wife did Kody really put on official paperwork?

“Which wife’s house did Kody use as his ‘main residence’ for government documents? Like driver’s license, car registrations, etc?” one Redditor asked online this week. “Do you think Kody used the address of whichever wife he was legally married to at the time? And what about things like doctors’ appointments and the bills they send you? Do you think he used different wives addresses for those items so the wives would feel ‘equal?’”

Although Sister Wives fans generally have a wide range of opinions when it comes to the Brown family, this question had more of a simple answer.

“Probably Meri’s since they were legally married, then Robyn’s once they got legally married,” another Redditor pointed out.

Others chimed in and agreed. It was easy to use Meri’s address for government documentation until they officially divorced. After that, he would likely have used Robyn’s.

But now that Kody and Robyn are the only ones still romantically involved, this seems to have worked in their favor anyway. It would be much more complicated for Meri to leave the family if she and Kody were still legally married.

Although Sister Wives fans all know the original three wives left Kody Brown ages ago, they will see it all unfold on television this season.

In the trailer, Robyn Brown admits to feeling like an “idiot” for getting left behind by the other wives. But after the grief she’s put the other wives through, most Sister Wives fans have trouble feeling sorry for her. After all, she is Kody’s legal wife now.
