Sister Wives’ Broken Brown Family Reflects on 2013 Commitment Ceremony: ‘We Failed Ourselves’ (Exclusive)

While exes Kody and Christine can look back on the celebration with some warmth, Robyn is so wrecked she needs a break, and Meri admits she is “mad” about her plural marriage covenant’s collapse

The Brown family is reflecting on how they’ve failed each other following the demise of their plural marriage.

In a teaser shared exclusively with PEOPLE ahead of Sunday’s Sister Wives: Look Back special, the family reacts to their happier days as a plural family while watching their 2013 commitment celebration.

The clip sees Kody Brown announce the family’s plans to honor their commitments to each other surrounded by their loved ones. As a scene of their children walking into the ceremony plays, Christine Brown gushes about feeling a sense of pride as she reflects on how far they’ve come.

Reliving these memories becomes too much for Robyn Brown, who declares through tears that she “can’t watch this” and walks off set in need of a “break.”

As the other family members continue to look back on their special day, Janelle Brown can be heard promising to “teach, allow and promote the value of making conscious and responsible choices” and Robyn vows the family will “embrace one another with a covenant of eternal nature.”

After Christine says she has to “decided every day, am I going to be a good sister wife today or a bad sister wife today,” the video concludes and Meri Brown admits she’s “so mad at us, every single one of us.”

“We failed ourselves,” she adds with a wistful smirk.

Despite their shortcomings and Christine’s decision to leave plural marriage behind, the mom of six explains that she “decided” to keep it sacred and calls their commitment ceremony “one of those days that was special.”

“I felt like I was so inspired. We just failed to abide by it, I guess,” Kody adds. “There just wasn’t enough loyalty in the family.”

Meri continues, “What is it that they say, your mission should you choose to accept it? We didn’t choose to accept it. It’s heartbreaking to me.”

Three of Kody’s marriages imploded within 14 months. Christine was the first to leave in November 2021. A year later in December 2022, it was revealed that he had separated from Janelle. A month after that, his broken union with Meri was confirmed in January after they’d been platonic and distant for years. Robyn is his only remaining wife.

Christine went on to find love again and went public with her relationship with David Woolley on Valentine’s Day 2023. The couple tied the knot in October surrounded by friends and family, including Janelle.

Though the family has gone their separate ways, Robyn previously told PEOPLE she hoped they’ll one day be able to reconcile.

“It looks a little different,” she said of the family’s current dynamics. “I sure hope it’s possible, but I can’t have expectations. I can’t put expectations on people, I’m realizing more and more, as far as family and that connection and spending time together and stuff and operating kind of a family. So I hope and I pray that it’s possible, but that will be that a situation where everybody has to choose that. So I don’t know.”

Sister Wives: Look Back airs on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
