Jessica Capshaw is back as Arizona in exclusive Grey’s Anatomy season 20 trailer

Arizona Robbins is officially back!

Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive new trailer for Grey’s Anatomy‘s upcoming 20th season, which sees Jessica Capshaw’s Arizona return to her old stomping grounds. As to what she’s doing back in Seattle, the trailer doesn’t give away much, though Arizona can be seen asking the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial, “So who wants to make history?”

But Arizona isn’t the only familiar face. Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey is also featured prominently in the trailer as the doctors deal with the aftermath of the season 19 finale (and she helps navigate the question of which intern might be getting fired).

Speaking of the season 19 finale, let’s not forget that last year ended with Teddy (Kim Raver) collapsing in the operating room. And from the looks of the trailer, it isn’t going to be an easy road ahead. The trailer features several worried looks from the Grey Sloan Memorial team — and an update that Teddy is in “critical condition.”

Finally, the trailer offers a first look at Natalie Morales, who’s joining the show as Monica Beltran, a pediatric surgeon who wastes no time in butting heads with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone).

When Will ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Be Back for Season 20?

What’s next for the long-running medical drama.

The lights are still on at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. In March 2023, ABC confirmed that Grey’s Anatomy would get a landmark 20th season, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama on TV. The news came about a month after Ellen Pompeo announced that she would be exiting the series in Season 19. So, what’s in store for the never-ending show going forward? Here’s everything we know about Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy so far, including who’s in the cast and when it will premiere.

Will there be a Grey’s Anatomy Season 20?

We’ve got a pulse! ABC ordered a 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy, its longest-running primetime scripted series, in March 2023. The network simultaneously announced that executive producer Meg Marinis, who’s worked on Grey’s in some capacity since Season 3, would replace Krista Vernoff as showrunner.

What is the Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 release date?

Normally, the show would have returned in the fall, but it was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Following the conclusion of both strikes, ABC announced that the show would return on March 14, 2024.

On Nov. 15, 2023, Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson, and several other cast members shared Instagram posts indicating that the actors on the show were back to work.

Who is in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 cast?

Several Grey’s Anatomy cast members, including Kevin McKidd (Owen), Kim Raver (Teddy), Camilla Luddington (Jo) and Caterina Scorsone (Amelia), renewed their contracts in 2023. With that in mind, it looks like the Season 20 cast will include:

Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey)

Chandra Wilson has played Dr. Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy since the show premiered in 2005.

James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber)

James Pickens Jr. has been scrubbing in as Dr. Webber since the start of the series.

Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt)

Kevin McKidd joined the show in Season 5. In an interview with RadioTimes.com, he dispelled rumors he’s on his way out. “I love playing my character on Grey’s, I love what it’s done for my life and it’s like a family. Truly,” he said.

“We’ve been there so long, we’ve seen people have babies, get married, have sad things happen in their lives, kids’ graduations, it’s been so long now. It’s like my extended family. So I’m not going anywhere any time soon from that show.”

Kim Raver (Teddy Altman)

Kim Raver joined Grey’s Anatomy in its sixth season, stayed on for three years, then left before returning as Teddy in Season 14. But is she now getting written off? It sure seemed like her character died at the end of Season 19, but Raver also signed a new contract earlier this year. We shall see!

Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd)

ABC

Caterina Scorsone entered the Shondaland universe as Derek Shepherd’s sister in 2010, with a role on Private Practice. After making a handful of guest appearances on Grey’s Anatomy, she became a series regular on the show in its eleventh season.

Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson)

Camila Luddington had a recurring role as Jo in Season 10 and became a series regular the following year.

Chris Carmack as Link in Grey's Anatomy

ABC

Chris Carmack joined the show in 2018. His character, Link, has been a love interest to both Jo and Amelia. We thank him for his service.

Anthony Hill (Dr. Winston Ndugu)

There was some question as to whether Anthony Hill, who joined the show as Dr. Winston Ndugu in Season 16, would return for Season 20. After all, his character is married to Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), who’s off to build hearts in Chicago. But as we learned in McCreary’s two-episode goodbye arc, Maggie and Winston have decided to go their separate ways. He’s staying in Seattle.

Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt)

ABC/Liliane Lathan

Jake Borelli started out as a recurring character in Season 14. He memorably came out as gay alongside his character, Levi Schmitt, who came out in Season 15.

Season 19 introduced five new main characters who are going to be back—and presumably with even bigger story lines!—for Season 20. They were played by Harry Shum Jr. (Benson Kwan); Adelaide Kane (Jules Millin); Alexis Floyd (Simone Griffin); Niko Terho (Lucas Adams); and Midori Francis (Mika Yasuda).

Is Jessica Capshaw returning to Grey’s Anatomy?

Jessica Capshaw will return as a guest star on Grey’s Anatomy Season 20. She will reprise the role of Arizona Robbins, the pediatric surgeon she portrayed from Season 5-14. Viewers last saw Arizona in 2017— at the end of Season 14—when she left Grey Sloan to move to New York City.

ABC announced the news at the Television Critics Association Press Tour on Feb. 10.

Will Ellen Pompeo be in Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy?

Ellen Pompeo’s “last” episode of the show was its Season 19 midseason premiere, but she stayed on as a narrator and executive producer, and she returned for the Season 19 finale on May 18. Deadline reported in March that the actress was likely to appear in Season 20 as well, but that there was no “acting deal” at the time. Since then, costar Debbie Allen, who plays Catherine Fox, confirmed that Pompeo would, indeed, be back for the upcoming installment, although she didn’t share details of when or how.

How many episodes are in Grey’s Anatomy Season 20?

The season is shorter than usual due to massive production delays resulting from the writers’ and actors’ strikes. According to Debbie Allen, there will be just 10 episodes in Season 20, although ABC hasn’t confirmed that number.

Is there a trailer for Grey’s Anatomy Season 20?

ABC released a teaser trailer on Feb. 29, and it gives a first look at the return of Dr. Arizona Robbins.

How to watch Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy will keep its coveted slot and air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Seasons 1-19 are available to stream on Netflix.
