Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: Why Callie Isn’t Returning With Arizona Explained By Showrunner
Grey’s Anatomy season 20 showrunner Meg Marinis explains why fan-favorite character Sara Ramirez will not be returning in the upcoming episodes.
Grey’s Anatomy season 20 showrunner explains why Sara Ramirez will not return to the medical drama. Initially premiering in 2005, the ABC show follows the personal and professional life of Meredith Gray along with her other team of doctors at the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The show is one of the longest-running television shows and experiences significant cast turnover. However, recent reports have confirmed that several longtime Grey’s Anatomy cast members will return for season 20.
In an interview with TVLine, Meg Marinis, recently confirmed as the showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy season 20, revealed that Sara Ramirez, who played the beloved character Dr. Callie Torres, will not return for the upcoming episodes. She explained that even though the show likes to have some old cast members back, busy schedules sometimes prevent that from happening. Read her full comment below:
“ We have an open-door policy here. We always want to see old characters come back and interact with the new characters. But there are so many [alumni], and everyone has busy careers and schedules. On top of that, “his particular story really connected to Arizona and her specialty, so it made sense” for her former wife not to return to Seattle with her. ”
Who Is Expected To Feature In Grey’s Anatomy Season 20?
Season 20 will feature many characters returning, including Dr. Arizona Robbins and Dr. Miranda Bailey.
Although Dr. Torres will not feature in new episodes, her significant other, Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), will appear in season 20, with the previews showing her helping the new class of residents.
Since Grey’s Anatomy debuted in 2005, the medical drama has experienced loads of cast changes. This includes several main characters leaving the show after several years, while many new additions have been introduced over time. After the whirlwind Grey’s Anatomy season 19 finale, reports confirmed that Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., and Camilla Luddington, who portrayed Miranda Bailey, Richard Webber, and Jo Wilson, respectively, will all be reprising their roles in this new season.

It has also been confirmed Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Kim Raver, and the fan favorite Ellen Pompeo will all feature. It is known that Pompeo’s character of Meredith will feature in at least four episodes since the Grey’s Anatomy season 20 trailer teased some romantic tension between her and Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). Although Dr. Torres will not feature in new episodes, her significant other, Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), will appear in season 20, with the previews showing her helping the new class of residents.
Despite the copious list of expected reprisals, it is worth noting that Ramirez is not the only actor not returning to the show. After featuring on the show for nine years, Kelly McCreary announced her exit as she is looking to pursue other opportunities outside the show. Nevertheless, Grey’s Anatomy has many notable character comebacks to open a new chapter at the hospital and celebrate the show’s historic season 20.
