‘GH’ Star Maurice Benard Went ‘Berserk’ Over Michael Recast

Michael Corinthos hasn’t been seen on GH since earlier this year. The character was sent overseas for medical treatment after suffering bad burns in a fire. As it looks more and more likely that the soap plans to recast Michael, actor Maurice Benard reveals he went ‘berserk’ over recast. Keep reading to find out why.
GH Fans Demand Michael Return To Port Charles
Michael’s name is mentioned a lot on General Hospital right now, but the character hasn’t been on-screen since January. He doesn’t even know that he’s the father of Sasha’s (Sofia Mattsson) baby. She and Jason (Steve Burton) are pretending Jason is the father to protect the secret of Sasha and Michael’s one-night stand.
The regretful moment between Sasha and Michael came after he found out that his wife, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen,) was hooking up with Drew (Cameron Mathison.) Willow recently accused Michael of being an absentee dad, which enraged fans who pointed out that it wasn’t by choice.
With the baby’s paternity secret and an eventual custody battle with Willow, viewers think it’s time for Michael to come home. The show seemingly agrees and is reportedly auditioning for the recast. Actor Chad Duell announced he was leaving the show in late 2024 after playing the role since 2010. But he wasn’t the first actor to play Michael Corinthos.
Drew Garrett Reconnects With Maurice Benard
Actor Dylan Cash played Michael Corinthos as a young child. When it was time to age the character, the role was recast with Drew Garrett. He was only on the show from 2009 until 2010 but nabbed a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Young Actor.
The actor recently reunited with his former GH co-star, Maurice Benard. Drew Garrett was a guest on Maurice’s State Of Mind YouTube vlog about mental health.
The two discussed a huge seven-page scene they filmed together on the soap opera. Drew Garrett revealed how much he enjoyed working with Maurice Benard.
“I felt like you believed in me with that same ‘come-from’ that I did. I always felt like you were kind of street,” he said.
Unfortunately, that seven-page scene was one of Drew Garrett’s last on the show.
Maurice Benard Admits He Went ‘Berserk’ Over Michael Recast
Despite Drew Garrett’s Emmy nomination, he was let go from the soap opera in 2010. The show brought in Chad Duell as his replacement. According to Maurice Benard, he wasn’t happy about the decision.
He revealed on the vlog that he went “berserk” when he found out that Drew Garrett had been replaced on the show. He said that he took his anger out on Chad Duell and didn’t speak to him for months.
“I went berserk. First of all, we had just done that scene. It happens all the time and everybody comes and goes like a revolving door, but I came to work the next day and now Chad is there (who’s now a friend of mine). But, let’s just put the cards on the table. I’m not proud of it. I don’t recommend it, but I treated him badly for maybe like 6 months. I didn’t talk to him. It wasn’t cool.”
So where does Maurice Benard stand with Chad Duell and Drew Garrett now? The actor took to Twitter to share a news article about the vlog episode.
“I’m so happy I can consider both actors my friend and we all learn, or should learn from our mistakes,” he wrote.
