It’s often said, when fans hate an actor after they played a villainous character, then the actor must’ve really done their job. Recently, Cameron Mathison discussed what it was like getting aggression from fans over his General Hospital character. In fact, he even described an altercation he had with one of his recent fans.

Cameron Mathison Admitted He’s Used To Playing The ‘Good Guy’

Mathison was known for playing Ryan Lavery on All My Children from 1997 to 2011. However, starting in 2021, he’s also become known for playing Drew Cain on General Hospital.

Recently, Mathison appeared with many of his co-stars on The Jennifer Hudson Show. During the appearance, Mathison talked about what it was like playing a character who isn’t always such a good guy. More to the point, he revealed the impression this can give fans.

While on the show, Hudson mentioned that people often have a problem with Mathison’s character, Drew. Hudson herself asked, “So, is it hard when you go out and [get] recognized. What do people do?”

Mathison replied, “So, the thing is that I’ve almost only played like the good guy. The hero. And almost everything I’ve done so in the last eight months it’s been quite different from Drew and many times, I’ve heard from people… a lot of aggression.”

Drew Had A Surprising Incident With A Fan At The Supermarket

“But, one time in particular at a supermarket, somebody who recognized me was very excited to meet you and then quickly shifted and was like, ‘I hate what Drew Caine’s going’ and grabbed an apple. And threw the apple at me from across the produce section so that was new for me.

Admitting “it could be worse,” Mathison’s co-star Laura Wright chimed in, “She threw it with love, right?” Ultimately, Mathison felt, “The key is that people feel strongly about your character whether they like you strongly or don’t like you. It’s that neutral area that you don’t want, so I’ll take it.”

As previously reported, the appearance also touched on emotional moments while working on the series. Wright, for example, touched on a scene where she had to yell at Mathison around the time he lost his home and personal belongings due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

Taking to Reddit, many fans also shared their reactions to the video. Some, jokingly, wanted justice for Mathison. These comments included:

  • “Okay, which one of you threw that apple? I know you’re here. Tell your story. This is a safe space. (It’s not).”
  • “These are the same fans who tell me it’s just a show and my hatred for the unholy trinity is ridiculous. At least I’m not out there throwing apples at them.”
  • “I feel bad for Cameron. He does not deserve the hate for playing a fictional character even if he is somewhat delusional about Drew and Willow’s relationship. Same for the actors. They may have huge egos but they’re not in control of how their characters are written. (Well, except Maurice and Steve but that’s a can of worms I DO NOT want to get into lol.)”
