Fans of General Hospital have recently seen quite a few characters leave the soap. Thanks to a recent storyline, many suspect Sonny Corinthos might soon be leaving the soap. In fact, some suspect that his departure could be a permanent one.
Maurice Benard Has Played Sonny Corinthos On General Hospital Since 1993
Sonny Corinthos has been part of General Hospital since 1993. Since then, the character has been portrayed by actor Maurice Benard, with his son Joshua briefly playing a younger version of the character.
Throughout the years, the character has become known as a mob kingpin based in Port Charles. Becoming one of the soap’s central characters, his family and relationships have also become prominent parts of the soap.
As noted by Monsters & Critics, however, a recent preview has some fans worried that they might be seeing the end of Sonny in Port Charles. This could be well-tied to other recent events on the soap.
An episode from last week depicted Sonny clutching his chest in pain. At the time, it led to speculation that the character would suffer a heart attack.
As previously reported, co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten teased what fans could expect on the soap with the new year with TV Insider. At the time, it was shared, “Sonny is hit with an existential crisis that has him re-examining his personal and professional lives. He’ll be forced to make a big decision about his future; and anything that impacts the reigning mob boss of Port Charles will impact everyone on the canvas.”
The Interview Teased One Character Would Disappoint Sonny Twice Over
This crisis, tied with his medical emergency, could risk making Sonny and his enterprises vulnerable. Monsters & Critics noted that Selina and Sidwell could also serve as risks to Sonny’s territory.
The interview also touched on Sonny’s stories with other characters. At one point, it’s mentioned that, “Jason is thrust into uncharted territory when he must disappoint Sonny — twice.” The preview also similarly teased, “Will Laura be there for Sonny in his time of need?”
As mentioned, some fans suspect Sonny won’t survive 2025. On one hand, most of the Sonny’s mentions in the interview suggest the character will still be around. However, some have a lingering suspicion that his upcoming “big decision” might be connected to his own mortality or some other departure from the series.
It’s also noted that this comes out as many characters are starting to leave General Hospital. While the writers might have departures on the mind, this could also give the writers to keep as many characters around as possible.
Of course, even if the character is killed off, death isn’t always permanent in the world of soaps. Ultimately, fans will have to wait until 2025 to see what happens.
