‘General Hospital’ Why Fans Are Glad Sam McCall Died
General Hospital recently saw the death of Sam McCall with the character dying of a heart attack. Naturally, the death of a character makes an impression on fans. However, some have started to debate whether this might just be a blessing in disguise.
The Character Died Of A Heart Attack In 2024
Actress Kelly Monaco, who notably played Livvie Locke on Port Charles, first played the character in 2003. At times, however, the character has also been played by Lindsay Hartley.
On the soap, Sam is the biological daughter of mob boss Julian Jerome and attorney Alexis Davis. Given up for adoption, Sam returns to Port Charles as a con artist and a “bad girl” type character.
The character had recently been killed off the show through a heart attack, with actress Kelly Monaco leaving the show. That said, a recent post on the soap’s Reddit page had fans suggest the character’s death could be what the show needs.
As the original post opened up by noting, “I’m sure this is a controversial opinion.” However, they felt that “the past 3-4 weeks have been some of the most compelling since I got back into watching GH about two years ago after a 10 year hiatus.”
The user noted, “I think killing Sam and playing out this custody story feels organic and very human. It’s not mob wars or single name villains attacking our leads for unclear reasons.”
The post continued, “And the truth is Sam as a character felt exhausted IMO. There weren’t a ton of places for her to go and I don’t think that losing her is a great loss to the show overall.” The user added the character’s death could potentially create an “interesting story that can potentially play out for the next few years.”
General Hospital Fans Shared Their Thoughts
Some users agreed with the original post’s sentiment. As one user shared, “This is pretty much what I’ve been thinking, but much better expressed. Because I like Kelly Monaco, I think it’s been hard to square that with what is playing out onscreen now,” which they described as “just good soap.” They also noted, “It may also be that there’s some stability now with the show’s narrative direction.”
Another user felt that, “This is why I didn’t mind Sam dying much. Sam as a character has sucked for years and her death creates huge stories and longterm impacts” for multiple characters. This user also commented, “It was very easy to see how it would [benefit] the storylines.”
Some users felt anything to shake up the show would be for the best. As one noted, “That could be said for a lot of characters on there.”
Of course, not all fans agreed. As another user simply wrote, “Clearly not.”
