Recasting a character is a difficult process on soap operas. The new actor has a 50/50 chance of winning over the audience. ABC soap General Hospital has seen several recasts in the last few years that viewers are still getting used to. Keep reading to find out why fans think now is the time to bring Spencer Cassadine back from the dead.
Spencer Cassadine Presumed Dead
It’s been a little over a year since Spencer Cassadine met his watery death on General Hospital. The character was presumed dead in the Seine River after going overboard. The decision to seemingly kill off the legacy character was made after actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez chose to leave the show amid his rising star. He recently starred in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. He’s since booked even more roles, including a major role in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
At the time of Spencer’s “death,” he was romantically linked to Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali.) According to some fans, Spencer and Trina were on the way to becoming one of this generation’s soap supercouples. While Trina mourned her lost love for a while, soap storylines have to move on.
Enter Kai Taylor (Jens Austin Astrup.) Nothing gives good soap like a romantic triangle.
General Hospital Recasting The Role Soon?
Spencer Cassadine has been off-screen since January 2024, but he’s never far from fans’ minds. He recently crossed Trina and his grandmother Laura’s (Genie Francis) mind at Trina’s recent birthday party. Laura showed up to give Trina a gift and card from Ace, Spencer’s half-brother.
Any seasoned viewer knows that soaps don’t bring up a presumed dead character out of the blue. General Hospital fans excitedly took to social media to speculate that the sudser is finally recasting the role and bringing Spencer back to Port Charles.
ABC hasn’t officially announced plans to bring the character back. But one soap fan wrote on social media, “The recent episodes mentioning Spencer at Trina’s birthday and her looking at the art book he gave her show that he’s still a huge part of her story. They wouldn’t keep bringing him up if they didn’t plan something, right?”
Fans Set Their Demands
Many viewers agreed that the mention of Spencer was a huge hint that the show plans to bring him back soon… Just in time to blow up Trina’s new romance. But GH fans are weary of recasts. Jack Brennan, Lulu Spencer, and Kristina Davis-Cassadine have all been recast in the last two years.
One fan shared their thoughts on the possibility of recasting Spencer. They wrote, “I do think they should bring him back, but they might as well take their time and get a good recast because I’m pretty sure NAC is not coming back.”
Another General Hospital fan agreed, saying, “Spencer needs to be back but it needs to be done right. A big part of that would be the return of Nikolas too.”
But not all viewers are interested in seeing another back-from-the-dead storyline. One naysayer wrote, “Leave him gone, I like Trina and Kai together, he doesn’t know right from wrong and will just ruin Trina’s life.
Another pointed out, “It really is strange how fast parents move on after their offspring die as well. It‘s hard to care as a viewer.”
