‘General Hospital’ Fans Upset With Lulu’s ‘Insulting’ Return
Some recent developments on General Hospital have been rubbing fans the wrong way. In addition to the departure of one character, some felt the return of another character wasn’t handled well. These fans have also taken to social media to share their thoughts.
A Liver Donation Allowed A Character To Recover
General Hospital fans recently saw the death of Sam McCall of a heart attack. This followed the announcement that her actress Kelly Monaco would be leaving the show.
However, McCall’s death would allow the recovery of another character. At the end of November 2020, the character of Lulu Spencer fell into a coma and has remained in that condition for years.
It was noted that Lulu could recover through a liver donation. Sam ultimately sacrificed part of her liver, only to die in recovery.
This past Monday’s episode, however, saw Lulu jump out of her hospital bed after all these years. Within moments of waking up, Lulu was able to escape and set off to visit her childhood home.
On some level, the awakening is timely. When told that it’s currently November, Lulu doesn’t immediately register how much time has passed since she fell into her coma.
However, as noted by The Mirror US, many viewers disliked the story’s development. In particular, there has been criticism that the story is insensitive to real life coma patients, who often require physical therapy upon awakening.
Many Fans Compared The Story To Real-Life Cases
On X, one user wrote that, “How stupid. Lulu wouldn’t even be able to walk after being on a coma that long, let alone escape the hospital.” Another replied, “I find this whole Lulu running around insulting. I don’t care its a soap I lost one family member because they were bed ridden and another whose now the same because of immobility due to long term illness. They also added that “soaps need to be more realistic about this.”
Another shared that, “Agreed. It is so stupid. Maybe they could have made it a struggle for her to be able to walk and then have to mentally deal with it? They go for sensationalism instead of realistic storylines.”
Another user commented that the show addressed this issue with another character. As they wrote, “Yeah, at least, with Curtis we got a little bit more realism with him still struggling after his surgery, but Lulu running around is one of the main reasons I’m done again with this soap. I can’t take that insult to the actual struggle that goes on in real life.”
