‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Boss Hints at Major Changes (and Lots of Trauma) in the Aftermath of Teddy/Sam Cliffhanger
The interns are in big trouble and Jo is understandably grief-stricken.
The operating room became a zone of calamities in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 finale. The show will pick up mere hours after Teddy’s (Kim Raver) collapse when Season 20 premieres on Thursday, March 14.
It’s unclear whether Teddy will survive the cardiac event that sent her sprawling on the OR floor, and new showrunner Meg Marinis teased to Parade that Teddy’s uncertain fate will put a lot of people at Grey Sloan in a tailspin.
“Everyone is on edge. Everyone is worried. It’s Teddy. It’s the chief of surgery. I think everyone is freaking out. They’re panicking,” Marinis revealed. “It’s not just because of who she is and because she’s Owen’s wife, but the interns saw their boss collapse on the floor of an OR. I think if anyone saw their boss collapse, it would be traumatizing.”
The interns not only need to be worried about Teddy, but also about their jobs. Lucas (Niko Terho) and Simone (Alexis Floyd) went rogue and operated on a patient, Sam Sutton (Sam Paige), without a supervising attending. He bled out after Teddy collapsed. Meanwhile, Blue (Henry Shum Jr.) violated Maxine’s DNR (Juliet Mills) and incubated her because of how much she means to Jules (Adelaide Kane). The latter isn’t free from blame, because she was acting as Maxine’s doctor, despite Maxine being her roommate.
Marinis teases that the interns’ days of playing fast and loose with the rules will be coming to an end in the new season.
“They definitely tested the waters [in Season 19]. This is the pinnacle moment of them going rogue. Nobody is going to allow them to go rogue in the future,” she said. “I think there are going to be a lot of repercussions for how they went rogue, not just for the hospital but for those patients like Sam Sutton.”
Of course, other people will also not be taking Sam’s death well. Jo (Camilla Luddington) had grown very close to the charming adventurer before he died. To add salt to the wound, she missed the page about him being rushed into surgery because she was in the hospital parking lot, confessing her love to Link (Chris Carmack). The guilt of not being there when Sam died is going to be a hurdle for Jo at the start of the season.
“She’s going to have a very human reaction. You’re going to feel guilty and awful. Not only was he a beloved patient, but Jo doesn’t know there was a cardiac complication,” Marinis said. “Still, the fact that she wasn’t able to be in the room when it happened when she was monitoring him and checking on him the whole time, she’s going to be very rattled and unnerved.”
