NEW UPDATE: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 20 video trailer teases: Teddy’s ‘critical condition’ scare [WATCH]
She’s baaack! Ellen Pompeo‘s on-screen status as Meredith Grey in the upcoming 20th season of “Grey’s Anatomy” has remained a mystery … up until now. The actress was always expected to do the voice-over narration for the new episodes, but what about actually appearing on TV’s longest-running primetime medical series ever? Well, the mystery has been solved thanks to ABC‘s just-released “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 20 video trailer (watch above).
“How long do I have to wait?” Meredith asks at the start of the 60-second promo. The answer for fans is exactly 43 days, because the first of the 10 new episodes will premiere on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Note that Season 20 was delayed until mid-season due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes of 2023 — see the cast list.
Meredith is later seen in the hospital hallway when Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) warns her that “the interns are in trouble.” And Meredith’s first instinct is that the trouble-maker could be Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), aka the nephew of the late Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone).

Elsewhere in the jam-packed teaser, Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) declares his love for Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and they kiss passionately in the rain, Amelia and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) discuss the difficulties of remaining sober, Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) says he wants “to live a whole life” with Meredith, and Lucas and Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd) talk about their kiss on her wedding day.
The trailer ends in dramatic fashion, as Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) faints during a surgery and ends up as a patient at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. “Dr. Altman is in critical condition,” declares Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) as the video comes to a close.
Behind the scenes, Meg Marinis has taken over as showrunner from Krista Vernoff, who departed after Season 19. Marinis wrote the season premiere, which is directed by long-time recurring cast member Debbie Allen. Because of the late start, the 20th season will be the shortest since the first season with only 10 episodes total.
