‘GH’ Fans Stir the Pot: Will Anthony Geary Return as Lucky Hits Port Charles?
Anthony Geary is still known to many General Hospital fans for his role of Luke Spencer. However, recent events on the series have fans wondering if Luke should make his return to the series. On the other hand, bringing the character back might be easier said than done.
Anthony Geary Was Part Of A Prominent Supercouple
Geary first took on the role of Luke in 1978. For many fans, the character’s relationship with Laura Webber became an early prominent example of a soap opera “supercouple.”
Geary also appeared as the character in various spin-offs, like Port Charles, and even made a crossover appearance on the sitcom Roseanne. He continued on in the role well until 2015, although he briefly returned to the role in 2017.
This 2017 guest appearance would mark the last time fans would see Luke onscreen. In 2022, however, it was said that Luke died in a cable car accident while in Austria.
That said, in the world of soap operas, there are always ways for characters to come back. In fact, some fans speculate that recent events are asking for Luke to make his return.
Recently on the show, Luke and Laura’s daughter Lulu Spencer just woke up from a coma. The character had been comatose since 2020 following an explosion.
A Family Reunion Could Be Easier Said Than Done
During this point, she reunited with a variety of loved ones. Lulu’s brother Lucky Spencer had returned to the show after around a decade. Lulu’s mother, Laura, has also been a regular part of the show since 2015. Thanks to this, some fans are wondering if Luke should return and help to complete the family reunion.
However, there might be a few issues with bringing Geary back for the part. For one thing, he now currently resides in Amsterdam.
Geary himself previously talked about his reasons for leaving the show. In a statement with TV Insider, he shared that, “I really don’t want to die, collapsing in a heap, on that GH set one day. That wouldn’t be too poetic.” “In fact, it would be poetically incorrect. I have another life and I want time to explore it. Ever since I discovered Amsterdam and made it my home, I have found my artistic and social fulfillment there.”
At the time, though, Geary admitted he didn’t want to define himself as being “retired.” As he explained, “I’m an actor, a showbiz kid. This year marks 50 years for me in this business—a half-century of professional work—and I am not about to bring that to an end. I will always act. I will always be looking for another project.”
As the publication recently noted, as Luke’s death occurred offscreen, there is a chance that reports of the character’s death were exaggerated. As it noted, “Maybe he’s been spending years in hiding to protect his family back home, and when he learns about Lulu, he races back to Port Charles. If there was ever a time for another Luke Spencer adventure, now is the time.”
Fans Also Had Their Share On The Matter
That said, when it comes to soaps, characters can often come back from things worse than death. It’s also possible another actor could take on the role, but some fans likely still would prefer to see Geary in the role.
TV Insider even shared a poll asking whether they think Luke should return. Many felt Geary should be left alone. As one fan noted, “Luke is marvelous character. As much as I want him back, the gentleman has retired. Leave him in peace to enjoy his life in Europe.”
Others thought it could be a good idea. As one wrote, “You never know! A short few episodes might be a fun project for him!”
“And we, his audience since 1980 would absolutely love it! Millions from 1981 still are in love with Luke and Laura! It’s what dreams are made of.”
